Why Puffy Lux is the #1 Mattress of 202
Our Puffy mattress review takes a look at this new company that recently came onto the market promising great sleep at a great price.
Puffy just released amazing updates to their flagship mattress as well as their luxury Puffy Lux mattress and we take a look at it in this updated review.
The founders of the company behind Puffy wanted to come up with a mattress that felt like you were sleeping on a cloud, and thus the Puffy was born.
Our in-depth Puffy mattress reviews evaluate all of the criteria we use to determine what constitutes a good mattress, which includes firmness / support, comfort, sleeping hot, and other features as outlined below.

Is the Puffy Mattress Right for You?
Buy the Puffy Mattress if you like:
Softer mattresses – The Puffy mattress scores 5-6 on a firmness scale (10 being the firmest) which places it more on a softer side. It will provide you with pressure point relief and a good balance of support and comfort necessary for all sleeping positions but is not super firm. Someone wanting a firm bed may disappointed.
Memory foam feel – The Puffy is an all foam mattress that will provide you with deep compression support, contouring and the hugging feeling typical for memory foam mattresses, but it will not cause you to sink too much and feel trapped in foam.
Cool-sleeping mattresses – A thin and breathable cover of this mattress and the presence of the gel-infused cooling cloud foam layer make it sleep quite cool. It retains a minimal amount of heat and does not cause sweating and the feeling of stickiness typical for memory foam mattresses.
You might not like the Puffy Mattress if:
You like the feeling of sleeping on top of a mattress – The Puffy is a softer all foam mattress that will allow your body to sink into it to a certain degree for perfect pressure relief and if you like the feeling of sleeping on top of a mattress rather than inside it, and thus more firm, then this mattress may not be the right pick for you.
You are a stomach sleeper – If you are a stomach sleeper and you are looking for a mattress that will safely support your hips and shoulders and keep your spine properly aligned, then this mattress may not be an ideal option for you as it isn’t as firm as others. It may be too soft for your preferred sleeping position.
Construction and Materials
The Puffy is a 10″ mattress made of 3 layers of proprietary designed memory foam:
2″ Top Cooling layer – The top layer is made of 2″ of patent pending Cooling Cloud foam, their gel-infused memory foam designed to disperse heat away from your body by using convection and conduction and allow more effective airflow through the mattress for better cooling and comfort.
2″ Climate-Adaptive Regulation foam layer – This layer is made of 2″ of special Climate-Adaptive Regulation foam that provides extraordinary pressure relief on all temperature and humidity levels which makes it resistant to contractions and expansions that often occur from extreme temperatures.
6″ Bottom layer – This foundation layer is made of 6″ of dense support foam, that is designed to be responsive and the company claims 4x the support of traditional support foam layers.
The new, upgraded Puffy comes with an all-new Stain Resistant cover that allows you to easily wipe up all the spills. It is extremely soft and works together with the foam layers to provide a cool surface and comfort as well as wick way heat and moisture.
Besides this, their Zip-N-Wash cover allows for seasonal deep cleaning to remove dirt and germs that build up from regular use.
Firmness & Support
The Puffy is a universal comfort type memory foam mattress, designed to appeal to a wide range of sleepers.
We felt that the Puffy is a medium soft mattress, coming in around a 5/6 out of 10 on the firmness scale (10 being firmness.) Puffy has their own firmness scale on their site, which they rate a little firmer, in the range you see below.
As always, firmness is largely weight dependent, as I compressed the top comfort layer more than Kaye did since I weigh considerably more than she does (230lbs vs. 115), and felt more of the firmer support layers. She felt it was a little softer than I did, but much less so than other similar mattresses.
For me personally, the Puffy is on the softer side, due to my weight quickly pushing through the top comfort layer and compressing quite a bit, but not too much that it was too bad. This is more a function of my weight than the Puffy, as my body is much larger than average. However if you are looking for a firm mattress specifically, the Puffy mattress may be softer than you are looking for.
My weight was fairly distributed when lying on the mattress, and I didn’t “bottom out” and feel the foundation of the bed like I do with some lower quality foam mattresses when sitting up. However if you have a heavier body you may want to choose the Puffy Lux which will be a mattress with more support for your body and more firm.
The foam layers do a good job of providing support during sleeping, and worked well for us as side sleepers by supporting our hips and shoulders without causing numbness or stiffness which often is the case with firmer mattresses.
The new upgraded Puffy is a rather comfortable mattress, and has a nice top layer which makes it on the softer side as mentioned for lighter sleepers. The top layer of foam provides a bit of responsiveness and bounce without causing too much sinkage as would normally be expected in an the all foam Puffy bed.
Again, this is highly dependent on sleeper weight, as my heavier weight pushed down into the mattress much more than Kaye with her lighter weight, but not enough where I couldn’t enjoy the comfortable upper layers of the mattress, which provides good hug and body contour, without making you feel like you are “trapped in foam” like some mattresses.
The exterior of the Puffy mattress is very soft and comfortable, and the top layers do a good job at providing a comfortable sleeping surface. There is a degree of bounce from the transition layer material which does a good job a providing the medium feel that stomach sleepers may enjoy.
The softness of the cover combined with the initial soft response from the memory foam layers did make for a comfortable nights sleep, and this was shared by both of us.
The Puffy mattress does an excellent job of sleeping cool from the thin cover and presence of the gel memory foam layer designed to provide airflow and breathability. The gel in the upper layer prevents the buildup of heat and the company has put a lot of effort into making a bed with a memory foam feel that still sleeps cool.
We did not feel any discomfort or stickiness that is often the case with all memory foam mattresses, and the Puffy does well in this respect.
We would rate the Puffy as above average in terms of not sleeping hot, better than most memory foam mattresses in this regard, and not causing us to wake up sweating and sticky. The gel memory foam does an excellent job at not sleeping hot, something gel is good for.
Sinkage and Motion Transfer
In terms of sinkage and motion transfer, again with many of these mattresses it is highly dependent on sleeper weight.
As I weigh considerably more than Kaye, around 230 lbs, I tend to sink a lot more into the mattress when sitting up, changing positions, or on the edge.
It is true that I compressed the softer top comfort layer of the Puffy quite a bit, but the slightly firmer Climate-Adaptive Regulation layer and dense base layer below lifted my body weight with ease and stopped me from sinking even further into the mattress and feeling enveloped by it. My hips did not sink down too much and feel any discomfort, which some beds claiming to be medium firmness.
Kaye did not experience the same amount of sinkage as she weighs half of what I do. Nor did we experience the common phenomenon of her “sinking in a hole” or rolling towards me from the unequal weight difference on the mattress. This is common with all foam beds that have more motion transfer than others. The Puffy mattress thankfully did not cause us to have this.
Lighter sleepers and stomach sleepers won’t have their body compress down into the mattress as much as heavier ones, and their hips and shoulders will be supported well. Another reason the company made the Puffy Lux was to support heavier sleepers, so if you are one whose body is a bit larger, you may want to read our Puffy Lux review from the other excellent mattress the Puffy mattress company makes.
The new upgraded Puffy does a great job of minimizing the amount of sinkage. I compressed the soft top layer to a certain degree, but it was nothing too extreme.
This tends to be the case with most 10″ mattresses with only a few layers and is more a function of my heavier weight, as mentioned, which tends to compress the softer top comfort layers of many 10″ mattresses when sitting up on the bed, or sitting near the edge.
Edge support when sitting near the edge of the mattress was good too. Due to my heavy weight (230lbs), I tend to compress most beds when sitting directly on the edge, but this wasn’t the case with the new Puffy.
I didn’t compress the edges too much at all and I also didn’t experience that feel like I was “rolling off the edge” of the mattress. The edge support was good and did not collapse completely like some mattress brands do.
With some all foam beds like the Puffy, edge support can be lacking but the edge support of this mattress doesn’t completely collapse under heavy weight like some beds.
As for motion transfer, there was a minimal amount of it when I adjusted positions during the night. A unique combination of various foams in the construction of this mattress did a great job of bringing the amount of motion transfer between the partners to the minimum, so we didn’t feel much disruption in our sleep.
Any motion transfer that occurred was not that bad, as the bounce from the inner layer and cooling cloud foam used did not cause and change in positions to be that bad. The motion transfer that was present didn’t cause us to be bounced around when moving.
All in all, the Puffy mattress does a good job with sinkage and motion transfer, on par or better than most memory foam mattresses in its class.
Smell / Off-Gassing
There was a small degree of off-gassing / smell when we opened up the Puffy mattress for our review, but nothing overpowering compared to some other mattresses we have reviewed.
We give the Puffy good marks in this category, and any smell that was present dissipated quickly. The Puffy and Puffy Lux do not have as much of the smell normally associated with all foam mattresses that get compressed and shipped in a box.
The Puffy mattress is pretty standard when it comes to their warranty, trial period, and support offerings. Most mattresses in this category share about the same offerings in terms of sleep trial (trial period) and warranty, and Puffy is no exception here.
- Shipping – free shipping, arrives in 2-7 days
- Lifetime Warranty
- 101 Night Sleep Trial Period
- Made in the USA
The Puffy mattress works with adjustable base beds, and in fact Puffy has an adjustable base of their own that we recommend that the team at the company has put together that goes well with their mattress products.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Puffy Mattresses Good?
The puffy bed is a great mattress if you are looking for an all foam mattress at a great price. Puffy delivers an excellent universal comfort mattress that is comfortable, sleeps cool, and doesn’t make you feel “trapped in foam” like some all foam beds. The 101 night trial period and lifetime warranty make it a really great offer. The team at Puffy got this mattress right and if you like the feel of memory foam you will love Puffy.
Which Puffy Mattress is Best?
This depends on if you are a heavier or lighter sleeper. Heavier sleepers will prefer the thicker layers of the Puffy Lux, which is 12″ thick compared to the 10″ thickness of the original Puffy mattress.
How Long Does it Take for the Puffy mattress to expand?
The bed usually takes only a few hours to expand, however waiting 24 hours is recommended for it to fully open up and expand.
Can I use an adjustable bed with the Puffy mattress?
Yes! Adjustable bases work great with the Puffy mattress, Puffy has one (you can check out the review for it here) or you can use one of the many other models on the market. If you have two twin xl mattresses and an adjustable base with 2 independent sizes (called a split king), each side can raise or lower on its own. However you must have 2 twin xl models to do this, not a regular king size mattress.
The Puffy is reasonably priced, with a queen selling for $1150 which given the comfort and quality of materials, is a rather reasonable price, but now you can get it for only $850.
The team at the Puffy mattress company has a great product that they stand behind with their 101 night sleep trial period and also offer the lifetime warranty. The Puffy Lux is a bit more expensive mattress, but thicker and has mores support for heavier sleepers.

Puffy mattresses come in a patented multi-layer design and the best DeepSleep technology out there, which is why the quality of this product is second to none.
Puffy Lux is a bit pricier than Puffy, which is completely understandable when you consider the materials used. They come in three layers – Climate Comfort Layer, Firm Core Support Layer and Cooling Cloud Layer. Puffy Lux comes with its own additional Body Adapting Dual Cloud Layer which provides better support, great body contouring and is extremely comfortable.
The manufacturing process is completely free of offensive chemicals so you can be sure of the quality of the product. The brand is also CertiPUR-US certified so you know you’ll be getting the best.
Below is a breakdown of Puffy’s construction process:
1) Cooling Cloud Foam – Available only in Puffy mattresses, this Cooling Cloud foam is made from patent-pending materials that provides the mattress with some of its most distinguishing features. A lot has been put in place by the brand to ensure that Cooling Cloud competes favorably against the standard memory foam found in other mattresses.
Here are some of the factors that makes Cooling Cloud Foam better than the standard memory foam:
The major advantage of Cooling Cloud over other materials is the fact that it has better cooling properties which can be attributed to its structure – the material is actually one of the industry’s coolest foams. This Cooling Cloud Memory foam also uses conduction and convection to disperse heat from the body which enables better airflow.
Puffy has a Gel Infused Foam that provides 8x better airflow compared to what is obtainable with the standard foam mattresses that can easily be purchased online, giving you that well rested feeling that comes with sleeping on a great mattress.
The speed it takes to contour to the shape of your body is another advantage of this Cooling Cloud material. With the regular memory foam, body heat is required to activate its contouring ability and cells. Cooling Cloud’s lack of cells is what makes it so quick to respond.
The difference in contouring time may not be much, but it still deserves a mention especially for those who’ll rather their mattresses contoured instantly, instead of having to wait for it to warm up.
2) Body Adapting Dual Cloud Layer (Exclusive to Puffy Lux) – This particular layer comes with the benefits of regular Puffy mattresses and can only be found in Puffy Lux products. It also has two additional inches of memory foam. In essence you’ll be enjoying double the features found in the regular Puffy, which means you’re in for a great night’s sleep.
3) Climate Adaptive Regulation Foam – Consistency is one of the major factors behind Puffy’s obvious success. Puffy mattresses are known for their advanced temperature and humidity-resistant materials like the Climate Adaptive Regulation Foam layer used for combating climate fluctuations.
4) Firm Core Support Foam –You cannot mention Puffy mattresses without talking about comfort, not only does it offer unmatched comfort, the Puffy mattress is also extremely durable and strong. Puffy uses Insta-Firm Technology in addition to their 6″ Firm Support Layer which offers better responsiveness and support than anything you’ll get from any standard mattress.
The Mattress Cover
Puffy mattresses have their own special stain-resistant covers, thanks to some high-quality materials.
Though not remotely washable or removable, its stain-resistant properties make the cover easy to wipe. Being waterproof, you can be sure that no oil, sweat or any other form of liquid can penetrate the mattress or cause any damage.
The Feel, The Firmness and The Support
Puffy Lux and Puffy are both rated six and eight respectively on the scale of firmness- this is considered the sweet spot by most sleepers. Being a little softer than the Puffy mattress, the Puffy Lux offers some extra layer of comfort, which is what makes it so perfect especially for those suffering from joint or back pain.
With this product, you can be sure of an enjoyable sleeping experience and its low sinkage means that it will always return to its original condition no matter how many hours you spend on it. You will also enjoy some high body contouring, which is all you need for a great night’s sleep.
This mattress is extremely responsive which is great for couples in terms of intimacy. It has a solid foundation which can withstand any amount of pressure without causing any damage, and is gentle enough that your partner’s movements will not disturb you while you’re asleep.
